10 Ways To Enhance Your Macbook Pro Or Air Experience

You’ve forked over a considerable chunk of change in order to have one of the coolest, most user-friendly notebooks on the market. Isn’t it a waste if you don’t learn some helpful ways to enhance your Macbook Pro or Macbook Air user experience? Try some of these tips and tricks in order to get the most out of your Mac.

1. Streamline Your Apps

Speed up your Mac by disabling or getting rid of apps you don’t use. This means uninstalling unwanted applications and disabling start-up apps by going to System Preferences/User and Groups/Login Items and unchecking any apps you don’t want or need.

2. Upgrade Hardware

If you really want to “soup up” your Macbook, you can add extra RAM and replace the hard disk drive (HDD) with a faster solid state drive (SSD). These upgrades cost a bit, but are worth it if you’re a heavy user and tax your Mac with powerful apps.

3. Get External Speakers

Speaker volume on all Macbook models is notoriously low. If you use your Macbook Pro or Air for entertainment (and who doesn’t?), invest in some decently powered external speakers to significantly improve your audio experience. You don’t have to spend too much to get some really great sound out of your machine.

4. Use Gestures

Go to System Preferences and select Trackpad. There are a host of gesture options, some of which are bound to appeal to you, including tap to click and three finger drag. Two finger scrolling is also a noteworthy life-changer, though it is not something you can enable or disable in Gestures.

The following six keyboard tricks are displayed in a short Buzzfeed video, which you can see below.

5. Precise Volume And Brightness

Hold down shift+alt/option and adjust your volume controls (F11, F12) by ¼ of a normal increment. Do the same for brightness: shift+alt/option and brightness (F1, F2).

6. Quick Dictionary

Get definitions for highlighted text by hitting command+control+D. *This didn’t work when I tried it for website text using Google’s Chrome browser (it did in the address field) and even less in Firefox, but worked fine when using Apple’s native Safari browser.

7. Special Characters

As with many smartphones, accented letters (diacritics) can be chosen by holding down the letter that needs to be accented. For example, holding down the “A” key will allow you to select à á â ä æ ã å or ā.

8. Paste Plain Text

Hitting command+control+V allows you to select, copy and paste “clean” or plain text without hotlinks or formatting.

9. Negative display

Command+alt/option+control+8 reverses dark and light colours on your Mac’s screen, making some pages or documents easier to read in sunlight or less disturbing to someone lying next to you in the dark and trying to sleep.

10. Silent Start Up

Hold down mute (F10) when you turn on your Macbook and you’ll avoid that loud chord which alerts everyone in the house that you can’t sleep and are about to watch YouTube videos at 3 am.
