Why I Upgraded to a Solid State Drive – and Why You Should Too!

Let’s get a confession out the way: I’m an Apple “fanboy.” Every time there’s an Apple launch or keynote event, I watch with bated breath, waiting for news of something that will persuade me to part with my hard-earned cash.

However, over the past couple of years, nothing has changed sufficiently in the Macbook Pro product line to persuade me to part with my trusty laptop. I’d love a shiny retina display, but the cost of replicating the specification of my existing Mac with this addition is out of my reach.

So, instead of changing the laptop itself, I decided a few months ago that it was high time I invested in a Solid State Drive (SSD).

The cost of SSDs

SSDs have always been significantly more expensive than hard drives, and this fact remains. However, the prices have now come down enough to make a high capacity drive an affordable (if slightly luxurious) investment.

I’ve never bought into the idea of having a low capacity drive and storing my media elsewhere. I like to have everything in one place. As such, I pulled out my credit card and invested in a 750GB device.

The process

There are various different ways of migrating to an SSD drive. A popular option is to use some kind of drive-imaging software to replicate the entire drive contents, and some drives even come with a software solution included.

In my case, I decided it was time to do a clean install of my operating system. I backed up my data with Apple’s Time Machine, started again with the SSD, and then restored my apps and data. The whole process took about half a day.

The result

I’ve upgraded a lot of computers, having worked in the industry for years. However, you never get a better “real life” comparison than when you upgrade your own.

My verdict can be summed up with one word: “wow!” This is an upgrade I still appreciate months after implementation. It took me at least a week to get over the novelty of opening a host of applications one after the other, just to see them all instantly pop up on the screen in less than a second.

If you’re wondering whether to make the jump to SSD, don’t wait a moment longer. I’ve not benchmarked my performance improvement (though you’ll find plenty of people who have, should you like that kind of information). All I will say is that I no longer ever wait for my laptop to catch up with me. Best. Upgrade. Ever.
