10 Apps that You and Your Dog will Love

There are 164 million pet owners in the US alone, and more than half (83.3 million) own dogs. That’s a lot of dog treats! Here are 10 apps that you and your dog will have fun trying.

Knowledge

1. Dog Breeds

Few dog owners can tell one breed from another. Dog Breeds is a game app that will test your knowledge about (you guessed it!) different dog breeds with escalating levels of difficulty. You learn as you bomb. Pretty soon you’ll be a doggie Einstein.

2. Petcube

Ever feel the need to voyeuristically spy on your dog, speak to them from afar, or play with them while you’re at work? Of course you have.

Petcube is a nifty box controlled by a smartphone app that allows you to record your pets and even play with them remotely via a built in laser pointer. It also has a microphone, so you can tell them to get off the furniture as needed.

Training

3. Dog Whistle

If you think an actual dog whistle is passé (as well as unsanitary), you can download this virtual whistle app to train your dog. It gives you a range of frequencies to choose from, depending on how your pooch reacts. If it runs away yelping, you should probably dial it down.

4. Dog Training

If you don’t want to spend money on a trainer, this is a good app for you. It spells out each step for different types of training. It’s a good one to pair with the Dog Whistle app.

Health

5. PupTox

If your puppy is prone to chewing on anything and everything (as most pups are) you’ll want this app. It provides a list of common household items that may be toxic to your dog, including plant varieties and would-be table scrap candidates. Hint: hold the onions, they’re poisonous.

6. MapMyDogWalk

If you want to know exactly how much exercise you and your dog are getting during your daily walks, use this app to track time, speed, pace, distance, and calories via your smartphone’s GPS. You can even record your route.

7. Pet First Aid

Just like with children, you never know when you’ll have to handle a medical emergency with your dog. This app provides precise video instructions about what to do when your dog stops breathing, chokes on something, breaks a limb, or is bleeding from a backyard brawl. It also shows how to restrain your pet properly should the need arise.

8. Dog Vacay

This is a handy app if you suddenly have to go away for more than a day. It helps you find an insured, well-reviewed, and thoroughly vetted dog sitter on short notice. They can also use the app to provide you with a daily photo report on your pet.

Sundry

9. Dog Translator

No, it’s not a real translator because the app developers couldn’t find a dog smart enough to provide a comprehensive lexicon, but it’s good fun all the same. It records your dog’s barks and gives an approximate translation.

10. Walk for a Dog

The true dog lover will require this app. Using it on dog walks keeps a record of how far you walk. For each mile walked, the app developer WoofTrax gives a corresponding donation to the animal shelter or rescue organization of your choice. Charity, exercise, and pet care: the holy trinity of smartphone applications.
