Yahoo Launches Aviate Homescreen, Promises Fewer Apps and More Content

Yesterday Yahoo announced it was ready to launch its new Android Homescreen, the Yahoo Aviate. So what is Aviate, and what does it do?

Before they were acquired by Yahoo, Aviate spent some time tweaking the beta and preparing it for the public. Yahoo describes it as “the intelligent home screen that simplifies your phone.” Aviate takes info from your apps and tailors it to your location before displaying it in a convenient home feed.

It’ll alert you when the weather changes in your area. It’ll scroll relevant local news on your homescreen. The calendar reminds you of pending meetings and includes convenient conference call buttons. A swipe up displays your most-contacted list, complete with calling and messaging shortcuts.

Yahoo’s calling it more than an app. The company says it’s a complete “mobile homebase.” Aviate is available right now for devices running Android 4.0 or later.
