Amazon Enters the Smartphone Jungle. Here’s What You Need to Know

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos revealed the latest addition to their Fire line yesterday, and it’s a smartphone. It’s not just an ordinary cellphone, mind: the Fire aims to shake up the whole smartphone game. Here’s what we know about it so far:

a 4.7-inch, 3D-enabled screen

The Fire’s most unique feature is it’s group of four front-facing cameras. Why four? Because it makes things 3D, like so:

The 3D will also work in the dark, thanks to infrared technology.

$199 for the 32GB model, $299 for the 64GB one

Like the iPhone, initially the Fire will be available with AT&T only. Sorry!

MS Office-enabled

Read-only, unfortunately. Users will be able to open and view MS Office files, but the Fire will have full Outlook support, as well as compatibility with your Microsoft calendar and contacts.

Includes Amazon’s Firefly service

With Firefly you can browse books, DVDs, music, and TV shows and buy them instantly on (where else?) Amazon.

Also comes with Amazon’s other service, Mayday

Mayday is Amazon’s proprietary service for live chatting with one of their customer service representatives. Could prove to be useful.

Includes 1 year of Amazon Prime.

A $99 value, Amazon’s two-day shipping and instant video service will also be available as a free 1-year extend to existing Prime customers.

Stocked with apps for streaming

Amazon says that Netflix, HBO GO, ESPN, YouTube, and Showtime will all be available from the get-go.

Tons of business features incoming

Corporate Network, VPNs, Data encryption, Mobile Device Management...how’s that old Blackberry of yours doing?

One of the things Amazon points out is that its goal is not to sell handsets. The phone will be but a vessel for pushing Amazon content and drawing people into the Amazon ecosystem. Its novel 3D and Firefly features may prove to be a hit, but as always, it’s up to the consumer. Like what you hear? Then preorder soon, because the Fire starts on July 25th.
