Microsoft's Patents Revealed by Chinese Ministry of Commerce

Microsoft has been licensing access to part of its patents for years. In doing so, the company offers device producers protection from litigation that is in any way related to Android and Chrome OS. Microsoft claims that some 70% of Android phones sold in the US are covered by licensing agreements. While boasting about this figure, they remained silent on the issue of which patents are infringed by Android. That list has now gone public thanks to China's Ministry of Commerce, who recently revealed a long list of Microsoft patents that formed the recent approval by the Chinese of the Nokia deal.

Actually, the Ministry revealed two lists on its web site. The first contains 310 patents and applications, while the second one contains around 100 on which the Ministry focused. These lists include plenty of technology that was developed at Microsoft as well as patents that were acquired at auction after the Nortel bankruptcy. Of the total number, 73 are standard essential patents and 127 are patents implemented in Android. This list also reveals patents that Microsoft previously used in a lawsuit against Barnes and Noble

It is estimated that Microsoft makes around $1 billion each year in royalties from the patents it licenses to Android device manufacturers.
