Samsung Announces Galaxy Tab S, the Only Real Competitor for the iPad

Samsung continues to impress with its goodies. The electronics giant announced its flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab S, at the annual Galaxy premiere last night at New York City's Madison Square Garden. The "premium" tablet is a true rival for Apple's iPad, as Samsung hopes to become a key player in the consumer technology game.

The thinnest and lightest tablet Samsung has ever made, the Tab S comes in two sizes: an 8.4-inch and a 10.4-inch version. The specs are the same for both models. The price tag also puts the Tab S on par with Apple’s tablets. The 8.4-inch Tab S starts at $399, only a bit more expensive than the iPad Mini, while the 10.4-incher starts at $499, just like the iPad Air.

The tablet boasts an elegant design. Front faced, it looks good. The Tab S offers the ultimate HD-colour experience on a Super AMOLED screen, which the company is putting on a tablet for the first time. The back of the tablet looks quite ergonomic. It features a dimple-patterned back cover, the same one used in the Galaxy S5 smartphone.

There are also plenty of bells and whistles. Samsung's Tab S has a fingerprint sensor embedded in the home button that allows users to unlock their device without typing in a password. Users can also pay for items bought online via PayPal.

Multitaskers will love that they can make and answer calls from this Samsung's Tab S tablet, regardless of the location of their smartphone at home, with the “Call Forwarding” feature. The “Quick Connect” feature allows users to share photos and videos easily across nearby devices. Users can optimize their profile with the “Multi User Mode,” and with “Kids' Mode” your little ones can comfortably and safely use kid-friendly apps.

Apple is also on the move to introduce better multitasking for its iPad users. New iPads are expected to be unveiled in September, when Apple plans to introduce a new “Split Screen Mode” that will allow users to run and interact with two apps at once rather than toggle between them.

Samsung's tablet also comes with exclusive content and applications, including “Papergarden,” Samsung’s debut digital and interactive magazine. The Galaxy Tab S also features the “Marvel Unlimited” app, a portal to 15,000 Marvel comics, and “Kindle for Samsung,” which provides users with one free book per month. Samsung has also partnered with Google Play and Netflix.

In addition to the Tab S, Samsung also announced a few new tablet accessories, one of which is the Book Cover. This sleek tablet cover improves the mobility and efficiency of the device. The unique Samsung-developed “Simple Clicker” allows the tablet to be adjusted to three different angles: the viewing, the touch, and the typing mode, to suit the consumers' needs.

Other accessories include the Simple Cover, the Bluetooth Keyboard, and the Level Series of audio products.

The Tab S tablet is only the latest of a slew of amazing products from Samsung in the past few months, including the Tizen-powered smartphone Samsung Z, the personal health and fitness wristband, the Galaxy S5 smartphone, the selfie camera smartphone Galaxy K, and wearable wristbands (watch hands-on videos on these devices).

Would you choose Samsung's Tab S over the Apple iPad, and if so, why? We would love to hear your thoughts. Sound off in the comments below.
