Tesla CEO Releases All Patents, Wants Everyone to Make Electric Cars

A name like Elon Musk instantly makes you think of a supervillain. But the eccentric Tesla Motors CEO turned out to be more of a superhero yesterday, when he announced that his electric car company is opening up every single one of its patents: electric motors, batteries, chargers - everything.

According to Musk, “Tesla will not initiate patent lawsuits against anyone who, in good faith, wants to use our technology.”

The automotive world was in shock after the announcement, although judging from the tech innovator’s previous endeavours, it comes as little surprise.

The Tesla head and PayPal co-founder seems to apply the same vision to his electric car venture as to all his other projects. After his spacefaring company SpaceX announced plans to populate Mars with 80,000 people in 20 years’ time, Tesla intends to build an underground tube train that goes from LA to San Francisco in half an hour.

Obviously, the man’s thinking big. So big, in fact, that he wants other carmakers to use his technology to bring sustainable transport for everyone.

“We believe that Tesla, other companies making electric cars, and the world would all benefit from a common, rapidly-evolving technology platform,” said Musk about the patent release.

Tesla Motors already dealt the car market a massive blow with its (reasonably) affordable sedan, the $70,000 Tesla Model S. Still, despite dotting the continental US with free charging stations, Tesla faced serious pressure from gas car manufacturers when New Jersey banned the direct sale of Tesla vehicles in the state.

Now, after the ban is set to lift and Tesla is expanding its sights and its market, Musk wants other companies to innovate as Tesla does. Part of that is doing away with patents completely, and the Tesla chief hopes that other manufacturers will follow in his footsteps.

“I suggested it to BMW,” he said.
