7 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying New Tech

You’ve got some money set aside, and you want to buy a new gadget. Whether it’s a tool or a toy, you want your new piece of tech to work, last, and make you happy. Here are seven questions you should ask yourself in order to get the most out of your new purchase.

1. Will I use it?

Do I really plan to get work done on this iPad, or am I buying it because everyone’s got one? The first thing to consider when making a purchase is whether you have the time and space in your digital life for your new gadget. If you’re reasonably sure it’ll get daily use, go for it. But if you’re only getting it for the flash factor, it might be smart to hold out.

2. Can I use it?

Apple products notwithstanding, user-friendliness should be a factor you take into account when deciding on your next purchase. Skim some reviews and see what people are saying about the learning curve. Then, take some time to familiarize yourself with the software and UI-- it’ll pay off once you have the device in your hands.

3. Is it worth it?

A $15,000 Ultra-HD TV might seem like overkill to most, but a PC gamer will think it’s a steal. Value is relative, and the best indicator is always price comfort. Shop around and compare prices, but in the end, go with your gut. If the price feels right for the piece, it’s usually a no-brainer.

4. How’s the build?

One of the first things tech reviewers note is the build quality. Plastic, metal, or glass? Robust or flimsy? Make sure to get some hands-on experience with whatever you’re buying before making the leap-- you don’t want your fancy new gadget getting scuffed (or broken) after a couple of days.

5. Are there multiple versions?

We’re looking at you, smartphones, although a lot of product categories create this dilemma for users. Yes, the Galaxy S5 just launched, and it’s super tricked-out. But the S5 Mini is right around the corner. Do you really need a screen that big? Will the price difference get you something extra? Weigh the pros and cons carefully, because latest isn’t always greatest.

6. Is it pretty?

Admit it, you care. Aesthetics are always important to some degree, whether we’re talking about a car, a phone, or a home entertainment system. Apple spends a huge amount of time and resources on design for a reason, and it certainly pays off. As always, the more your eyes like it, the more your hands will use it.

7 . Should I wait?

Waiting for a price drop or a hardware redesign is almost always a good idea. Even the earliest of early-adopters should consider whether the cutting-edge innovation they’re paying for adds real value or just novelty. Unless a new piece of tech has an invaluable place in your (business) life, holding out for a deal is usually a good strategy.
