Google is Expanding its Reach with the Acquisition of Skybox Imaging

The universe is expanding and so is Google Inc. This Tuesday, Google Inc. announced that it is acquiring satellite imaging company Skybox Imaging for $500 million. Skybox Imaging is a company that provides high-resolution satellite imagery, high definition video and analytic services. It was named No. 1 on Inc magazine's list of 25 most audacious companies in 2014.

The reason for the expansion and acquisition of this company comes partly from the rivalry with Facebook, which is also acquiring satellite and drone companies. Both companies acquire these types of enterprises in order to expand the reach of their business and the quality of their services. What makes Skybox different to other similar companies is that it builds satellites that are equipped with next generation sensors and cameras for high-res imagery and videos that are smaller and lighter compared to traditional satellites.

The imaging platform this company builds is desperately needed for a new generation of business and other applications. According to Skybox's website, so far it has launched one satellite and it plans to launch 24 more.

Acquiring licences and approvals, as well as launching satellites, is costly, and is almost exclusively limited to some of the most powerful governments in the world. Because of this, Google also acquired the New Mexico-based manufacturer of solar powered drones – Titan Aerospace. Prior to that, Google also launched a small network of specially-designed balloons so it could deliver Internet connectivity to remote and unapproachable areas and provide help with disaster relief. On the other hand, Facebook announced in March that it has created a “connectivity lab” project that consists of developing satellites, drones and other technology that will expand Internet access to underdeveloped parts of the world.

Skybox released a message on its website that announced the deal with Google: "The time is right to join a company who can challenge us to think even bigger and bolder, and who can support us in accelerating our ambitious vision.” Google also announced that the closing of the deal is subject to regulatory approvals in the US.
