Martine Rothblatt Tops the List of Highest-Paid Female CEO's

Female chief executives and their incomes made headlines recently when the New York Times reported that they account for just 11 out of the 200 best-paid chief executive positions. What’s more, they also appear to be earning less. In coverage of the Equilar Top 200 Highest Paid CEO Rankings, provided by Equilar, The New York Times raised questions about whether executive compensation is out of hand and whether it may be to blame for widespread economic inequality in the US. Apart from the salaries, the most striking detail of the rankings is that the highest paid female CEO, Martine Rothblatt, was actually born as a man.

Rothblatt was a married father of four-- Martin Rothblatt-- when she underwent a gender reassignment surgery. She founded United Therapeutics in 1996 and has been its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer since the inception of the company. She was also the founder and CEO of Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Last year she earned $38 million, significantly more than the second place earner, Marissa Mayer of Yahoo. Mayer earned $25 million. The research shows that only 6% of CEO’s at the top 200 companies are women. It also appears that women generally earn around 80 cents for every dollar earned by men. On the other hand, more than half of these women CEO's are in the technology sector, an industry dominated by men. They also earn more than their male counterparts.
