Stressful times bring unhappy living – people are getting busier and alienated. Luckily, SoftBank Mobile, the core company of Japan's mobile communications, and Aldebaran, the maker and marketer of humanoid and programmable robots, will save the day, announcing their collaboration at a press release. The two companies will jointly develop “Pepper,” which will be available as of February 2015 in Japan, for slightly less than $2,000.
Pepper is the first personal robot that can observe and understand human emotions, and consequently react in an enthusiastic and appropriate way. Using algorithms, Pepper can communicate with people, make gestures, and recognize emotions. Pepper can also make jokes, dance, and entertain. In a word, Pepper can naturally engage, just like people would with friends and family.
But, there's more to Pepper. This humanoid can extend its capabilities by incorporating more robot apps into its motions, sensors, and conversation capacities. A software kit by Aldebaran will be provided for creating robot apps in September, later this year.
The world's first personal robot can read emotions and make people smile. As a daily companion, Pepper can improve people's quality of life, bring happiness, and generally make people grow emotionally. The humanoid will take interaction with technology to a new level, which sort of adds another dimension to our lives.
Designed as a means to boost people's quality of life, robot technology was the target industry for SoftBank Group, and with the help of Aldebaran, this vision will come to be – will the creation of Pepper. Utilizing emotion engines and Cloud Artificial Intelligence, Pepper could further evolve with collective wisdom.
