How Is Joining LinkedIn Groups Good for Job Hunting?

The employment scene has changed radically in the last few years. Networking has taken on a whole new meaning. There was a time when taking out an advertisement in the classified ads was the only way to make people aware of available jobs, and that was limited by a particular publication’s circulation.

Not so in today’s market. Thanks to the Internet, employers can browse networks where professionals of all disciplines congregate, and decide who’s the most qualified. LinkedIn is the top website for such purposes, claiming over 200 million users as of 2013.

The Value of LinkedIn

LinkedIn is highly interactive, giving members suggestions for jobs based on their profiles, and allowing employers to filter potential applicants for a particular position. Even if a member isn’t actively looking for a job, having a profile in LinkedIn ensures that they’ll never be too far out of circulation for anyone looking for a specific skill-set. So opportunities for career advancement are always within arm’s reach.

LinkedIn Groups for Job Hunting

One powerful tool the network provides for such advancement is LinkedIn Groups. Groups are forums for people who share a vocation or vocational skill. These can be based off of companies members have worked for, or they can be education, profession, or industry based.

Joining a relevant LinkedIn Group not only provides you with opportunities to interact with your professional peers, but it also expands and deepens your connections with the people who are most likely to need your talents.

When job hunting, it’s advisable to join as many relevant groups as possible. You can pick the brains of the people in the group who may be in the industry you are interested in joining, or who are working at the company at which you’re applying. Employers also favour posting job openings in particular groups with membership profiles that fit the bill, so being a member gives you access to these postings.

But it isn’t enough to simply join a group. You need to make yourself stand out as an applicant. Always keep your profile current. Remember that it serves as your proxy, so it should be as impressive as possible. Also, participate actively in group discussions, so that other members get to know you, and at the same time improve your ranking.

What kind of connections have you made through LinkedIn?
