10 Reasons To Eat A Pomegranate

Every once in a while, science decides something needs to be proven that we already know. Nutritional science does this quite consistently by applying the label “superfood” to commonly consumed natural treats.

Things like mollusks, kale, and blueberries are often lauded as some of the healthiest snacks in the supermarket. So in the spirit of giving credit where it’s due, let’s shine a bit more of the spotlight on one of the most underappreciated members of the fruit family: the pomegranate.

Pomegranates are rich in vitamins, nutrients, and sweet fruity goodness as everyone knows. You might be surprised, however to find out exactly how many different aspects of human health a pomegranate can actually affect.

Compiled here are ten items of particular merit that need to be brought to light, and may just convince you to stuff your basket full with these delicious fruits next time you drop by the store.

1. Rich in Antioxidants

Antioxidants are cancer-fighting molecules contained within your food. They combat free radicals (which are unstable electrons that can damage other molecules through a process called oxidation.

Oxidation can be defined as the transfer of electrons and/or hydrogen from one substance to an oxidizing agent. This reaction can cause a butterfly effect, which leads to uninhibited growth of a molecule, which in turn can mean uninhibited cell growth, also known as cancer. Pomegranates can help keep you cancer free!

2. Reduces the Risk of Prostate Cancer

The antioxidants in pomegranates make for an across-the-board decrease in cancer risk, but this superfood combats prostate cancer more effectively. This is due to the large quantity of polyphenols contained within pomegranate juice, which is known to aid in the process of apoptosis—a fancy term for the regulation of cell expiration—in certain cancer cells.

3. Promotes Healthy Hearts

Pomegranates have also been shown to promote heart health by decreasing the thickness of arterial walls, a major contributor to heart disease. With cardiac distress still being one of the most prevalent causes of death across multiple demographics, it would be wise to add pomegranates to your daily dietary regimen.

4. Lowers Blood Pressure

Feeling a bit stressed out? That vein on the side of your head bulging a little more than you’d like? A sizable portion of pomegranate juice can prove to lower hypertension by as much as 36%

5. Could Act As an Antibiotic

This fruit has really broadened its horizons. It’s like a jack-of-all-trades. In addition to taking out cancer, reducing heart risk, and lowering blood pressure, clinical tests have been conducted in which pomegranates actually eliminated harmful strains of E. coli and Staphylococcus. I think the pom is just showing off at this point.

6. Treats Erectile Dysfunction

You’ve got to be kidding me. Not only does it promote physical wellness, but now it’s also protecting a man’s most treasured utility? Take a breather, pomegranates. We all know you’re all about blood circulation, but we had no idea you were going to be so frisky with the concept…

7. Could Positively Impact Bone Density

From conjectural bones to literal ones, pomegranates are making no distinction. Though the phenomenon hasn’t been tested in humans, clinical trials using mice have shown that pomegranate juice introduced into the diet can produce a marked difference in bone density.

8. Helps Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

This fruit continues its quest to help out the entire human body by targeting its supercomputer next. The juice of the pomegranate is capable of decreasing symptom severity in Alzheimer’s patients, and due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it can actually help prevent the disease in the first place.

9. Lowers Cholesterol

After everything else we’ve talked about this almost seems commonplace, but high cholesterol is no joke for the folks who have to suffer through it. This is another result of the antioxidants that poms are packed with. They prevent buildup of LDL (also known as “bad”) cholesterol.

10. They’re Delicious!

With something so healthy for you, you’d imagine it would taste like cardboard. Not so with the pomegranate. They’re sweet, juicy, and oh so flavorful, and used in a wide assortment of recipes loved by one and all. With so much going for it, the pom might be getting a little full of itself. We’ll have to rename it the “pompous-granate.” Am I right?

*Crickets chirping*

Ahem. Well, they can’t all be winners, folks. Either way, grab yourself a pom and enjoy all the expectation-defying health benefits just as soon as you can!
